Skaftö’s First Vineyard

On the eastern side of Skaftö, we’ll plant the very first vines in May 2026 – 400 Solaris and Souvignier Gris vines will be the start of a new chapter in the island’s history.

Why here, why now?

Skaftö’s climate is challenging but also full of opportunities. With experience from our award-winning vineyard in Uruguay and the Solaris/Souvignier Gris grape varieties, adapted for cooler climates, we are building a vineyard that combines tradition and innovation.

The Vineyard

Our vineyard is located on the eastern side of Skaftö, where the rocks meet farmland and the sea is always close. Here Solaris and Souvignier Gris find the right balance between sun, wind and the cool nights.

The Grapes

Solaris and Souvignier Gris – “We have chosen Solaris and Souvignier Gris for their proven ability to thrive in cool coastal climates, with natural resistance to disease and a capacity to produce wines where freshness, aromatics and structure work together — together they are able to create complexity, depth and harmony in our wines.

Planting 2026

Planting will take place in May 2026. During the winter and early spring, the supports will be built and the ground prepared. The first few years are spent establishing and training the vines – patience is part of the essence of wine.

Sustainability

Our ambition is to create a vineyard with minimal need for pesticides. We invest in biodiversity, between the rows we will encourage clover and flowers to grow that benefitSkaftö’s First Vineyard friendly insects and soil health.

From Uruguay to Skaftö

Our journey began with 3,000 vines in Uruguay, a combination of Tannat, Merlot and Cabernet Franc varieties. There we learned the craft and made award-winning wines. Now we’ve returned home to grow wine where the sea meets the land, on Skaftö.
